SDG 02: Zero Hunger

Gulf Medical University (GMU), a prominent institution in the healthcare education sector, holds a steadfast commitment to societal well-being, beyond just healthcare. Embodying the essence of Sustainable Development Goal 2 (SDG2), GMU diligently works towards eradicating hunger.


In a meaningful collaboration with Thumbay Hospital, GMU has inaugurated a Food Court on its premises. This initiative is a significant step forward, ensuring the university community has access to nutritious and diverse food options, thereby directly contributing to enhancing food security and promoting healthy lifestyles.

 

Social responsibility is another pivotal area where GMU has made substantial strides. The university engages in activities aimed at fostering a conscientious community, aware of the collective responsibility towards achieving a hunger-free society.

 

Furthermore, GMU takes pride in organizing various awareness lectures and events, aimed at enlightening the community on the importance of food security, and the collective aim of eradicating hunger. These initiatives underscore the university’s unwavering commitment to fostering an environment conducive to learning, growth, and the attainment of SDG2.

At the Gulf Medical University, in collaboration with Thumbay Hospital, a visionary step towards holistic well-being has taken shape in the form of a cutting-edge food court. This innovative space encompasses a variety of restaurants and cafeterias, all committed to providing not only delectable meals but also prioritizing health and nutrition. With an expansive menu catering to diverse tastes, students, employees, and visitors alike can relish a wide array of options. What sets this food court apart is its round-the-clock availability, ensuring that wholesome and satisfying meals are acces sible at any hour. Additionally, there is a dedicated lunch break from 1 pm to 2 pm for both students and faculty, providing a convenient time for everyone to enjoy their meals. The affordability of the meals makes them accessible to all, and the strategic location of the food court benefits the entire area, creating a hub for nourishment and community engagement. This initiative embodies a dedication to fostering a culture of well-being and nourishment within the Gulf Medical University community.

The food court features the vibrant flavors of the Arab world and India, in a splendid ambience complemented by spacious seating and cozy interiors. This also marks the launch of the ‘Live & Learn’ concept at Thumbay Medicity, making it a lively space of social, professional and academic interactions.



FREE MEALS FOR PATIENTS

College of Dentistry, GMU in partnership with Athar, hosted a remarkable dental screening event on 14th April 2023. The event took place outside the Ajman Museum, where the university’s senior dental students and faculty offered free dental checkups to more than 1000 patients. Patients requiring further treatment were referred to Thumbay Dental Hospital, where they could receive needed treatment to improve their oral health. Patients were given dental kits that included toothpaste and toothbrushes, the patients were also served with free iftar meals.

 


RAMADAN CAN FOOD CAMPAIGN

Gulf Medical University (GMU) embraces the spirit of giving and compassion through its annual Ramadan Can Food Campaign. This initiative exemplifies GMU's commitment to making a positive impact beyond the realms of healthcare education. During the holy month of Ramadan, GMU rallies its students, faculty, and staff, as well as the wider community, to come together and contribute non-perishable food items. These provisions are then thoughtfully packaged and distributed to those in need, embodying the values of empathy and solidarity that GMU holds dear. The Ramadan Can Food Campaign not only addresses immediate hunger but also serves as a testament to GMU's dedication to community welfare, fostering a culture of kindness and support. This heartfelt effort underscores GMU's belief in the power of collective action to bring about meaningful change in the lives of those less fortunate.



GMU STUDENTS DONATED FOOD AND CLOTHES TO THE VICTIMS OF THE TURKIYE AND SYRIA EARTHQUAKES

GMU students rallied together to aid earthquake victims in Turkey and Syria. They donated crucial items like food and clothing, displaying both empathy and a global perspective. This selfless act reflects GMU's commitment to making a positive impact worldwide, underscoring the potency of collective action in times of adversity. By providing essential food items to the victims, GMU students contribute to SDG 2's objective of ending hunger and ensuring food security.



WE NEED FOOD, NOT TOBACCO!

A community engagement event on May 25, 2023 at Gulf Medical University was held in honor of World No Tobacco Day, aimed to raise awareness about the dangers associated with various forms of smoking and promote a healthier, tobacco-free lifestyle, under the WHO theme “We need food, not Tobacco.”



GMU-IVPN STUDENTS CLUB ORGANIZES A COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT ACTIVITY ON MEDICATIONS USE DURING FASTING IN RAMADAN

GMU-IVPN Club pharmacy students took the lead in counseling patients on the proper use of medications during the month of Ramadan. During the holy month of Ramadan, the students recognized the importance of educating patients on how to manage their medications while fasting.



BREAST FEEDING AWARENESS PROGRAM

In commemoration of the ‘Breastfeeding Week 2022″, the 4th year BSN students conducted a Community Engagement Program on ‘Breastfeeding Awareness’ on the Theme – Step up for Breastfeeding- Support and Educate in Al Qassimi Women and Children Hospital, Sharjah, on 4th October 2022, Thumbay University Hospital, Ajman on 5th October 2022 and Al Madeena Health Center, Ajman on 11th October 2022.
