SDG 04: Quality Education

Gulf medical University recognizes the pivotal role that quality education plays in transforming individuals, communities, and societies at large. Through a range of innovative programs, state-of-the-art facilities, and dedicated faculty, GMU strive to provide a nurturing environment that empowers our students with the knowledge, skills, and values necessary to excel in the dynamic field of healthcare. By aligning efforts with SDG 4, GMU aim to contribute to a future where accessible, inclusive, and high-quality education is a reality for all. This report seeks to illuminate the commendable efforts of GMU in advancing SDG 4 in AY (2022-2023), It is reflected in its vision, mission, and mandate (Link). Graduates

GMU has produced graduates under different disciplines of healthcare. Our graduates are working nationally and internationally to address the needs and serve the healthcare community.

Figure I.1 shows the GMU Graduates since inception under different disciplines and this is a good sign for the Quality Education

In the current academic year, a total of 593 students have embarked on their journey towards obtaining a degree. Among them, an impressive 385 students represent the first generation in their families to pursue higher education. This significant number of first-generation students reflects a commendable commitment to breaking barriers and achieving academic milestones. It exemplifies a dedication to education that transcends generational boundaries, demonstrating the transformative power of higher learning. These 385 trailblazing individuals not only pave the way for their own success, but also inspire future generations to aspire for educational excellence



Research and Publications


Gulf Medical University awarded for ‘Excellence in Research’ and recognized as one of the top 10 universities in health research by the Ministry of Health and prevention

The National Center for Health Research, in collaboration with Elsevier Publishing Research Company, conducted a thorough study on the state of health research in the United Arab Emirates for the period of 2017–2022, as part of the Ministry of Health and Prevention’s initiatives to support excellence in the field of health and medical research throughout the United Arab Emirates. The evaluation of numerous universities around the nation revealed that Gulf Medical University stood out for its commitment, innovation, and major advancements in contributions to health research.

With a relentless pursuit for excellence, Gulf Medical University has made remarkable strides in medical sciences research, contributing to the understanding of diseases, treatment modalities, and preventative measures. The university’s researchers have published studies in esteemed medical journals, enriching the medical community’s knowledge and improving patient outcomes.

And In 2022, 219 scientific papers were published across various medical, scientific, and humanitarian fields on Scopus.



International and National Collaborations

College of dentistry in collaboration with Biolase organized a workshop on ‘laser applications in periodontics’ for MDS periodontics postgraduates and dental interns

College of Dentistry, GMU in collaboration with BIOLASE organized a workshop on ‘Laser Applications in Periodontics’ for MDS Periodontics postgraduates and dental interns . The workshop included a brief introduction on the principles of laser therapy followed by a demonstration on the use of ‘Waterlase’ to perform various periodontal surgical procedures such as gingivectomy, frenectomy, gingival depigmentation and crown lengthening with osseous reduction. The participants were also provided with an opportunity to have hands on experience with the Waterlase laser device on goat heads.



International conference organized by COHME-GMU in collaboration with IIMS, Pune (India)

College of Healthcare Management and Economics, Gulf Medical University, Ajman (UAE) in collaboration with International Institute of Management Studies, Pune (INDIA) concluded an international conference “VISHLESHAN 2K22”. The conference theme “Sustainable Development: A Roadmap to an Equitable Planet” was inspired by UN Sustainability goals. The conference is supported by academic partners Emerald India/EmeraldPublishing, Faculty of Management Studies, Sabaragamuwa University, Lincoln University College, Selangor Darul Ehsan, Malaysia.

 



Preceptorship development program for nurses in GMU in collaboration with training & development centre & nursing department, Emirates Health Services, UAE

College of Nursing, Gulf Medical University was requested by the Training & Development Centre, Emirates Health Services to conduct a 2 day ‘Preceptorship Development Program’ for 200 EHS nurses to cater to the needs of senior nurses in UAE. The aim of this program is to equip senior nurses to hand hold and guide newly qualified graduate nurses and students as they learn to practice their profession in the clinical areas. In the long run the impact of this program will be seen in both the preceptors and preceptees. The competencies of preceptees will improve and thus enhance overall quality of patient care.



SPEAKER ON HEALTHCARE FINANCING AND SUSTAINABILITY

Dr. Vinaytosh Mishra, Associate Professor of College of Healthcare Management and Economics, Gulf Medical University, Ajman was invited as Guest of Honor during “International Conference on Global Financial and Business Environment” organized by New Delhi Institute of Management, India. He shared his insight on the role of Healthcare Financing in developing sustainable development goals (SDG)

Thumbay Institute of Health Workforce Development (TIHWD) builds on and expand the existing “Centre for Advanced Simulation in Healthcare (CASH)”, “Centre for Continuing Education and Community Outreach (CCE&CO)”, “Centre for Health Professions Education and Research (CHPER)”, “BA Centre for Online Health Professions Education and Training”, “Centre for Interprofessional Education, Research and Practice (IPERP)” and “Centre for Humanitarian Education”. Its main goal is to respond to national, regional and international shortages and the need for a competent health workforce, “Doctors, Pharmacist, Dentist, Nurses, Paramedics and All Allied Health”. Gulf Medical University’s College of Pharmacy welcomed distinguished guests from AbbVie Biopharmaceuticals. The delegate delivered a career workshop on: Career Boost: Hands-On Training by AbbVie Experts for CV Writing and LinkedIn Profile Building.



FACULTY DEVELOPMENT AND CLINICAL TRAINING WORKSHOP ON BICON DENTAL IMPLANTS ORGANIZED BY COLLEGE OF DENTISTRY

The College of Dentistry, GMU conducted an exceptional two-day clinical training and faculty development workshop on BICON dental implants at the Postgraduate Dental Center, TUH. A team of internationally renowned experts; Dr. Vincent J. Morgan, leading Bicon’s prosthetic team, USA, Dr. Laura Murcko, a distinguished clinical instructor at the Bicon Institute, USA, and Dr. Mauro Marincola, co-developer of the Bicon Implant System, brought their profound knowledge to the program.



BRITISH PHARMACOLOGICAL SOCIETY COLLABORATES WITH GULF MEDICAL UNIVERSITY’S COLLEGE OF PHARMACY TO HOST PRESCRIPTION SKILLS TRAINING AND ASSESSMENTS WORKSHOP

The British Pharmacological Society (BPS) and Gulf Medical University College of Pharmacy conducted an educational workshop, targeting students and practitioners from all pharmacy dis ciplines, to strengthen the knowledge base and best practices on the future of healthcare systems, medical education, prescription writing skills, prescribing errors, and the BPS Framework of Prescribing Safety Training and Assessment.



WORKSHOP TO EDUCATE YOUNGSTERS ON PREVENTION OF SLEEP DISORDERS CONDUCTED AT GULF MEDICAL UNIVERSITY TO MARK WORLD SLEEP DAY

In order to remind just how important sleep is and to celebrate it, Gulf Medical University celebrated World Sleep Day with great enthusiasm on March 17, 2023, which was organized by the College of Health sciences and Thumbay University Hospital’s Department of the Pulmonology and Department of Neurology. The annual event organized by World Sleep Day Committee of World Sleep Society  (founded by WASM and WSF), seeks to bring forth important issues related to sleep, and this year’s event was market with the slogan ‘Sleep is essential for health’ that aimed to raise awareness about getting adequate and quality sleep for maintaining good health and well-being in the overall community.



COLLEGE OF PHARMACY ASSUMES A LEADING ROLE IN THE LAUNCHING OF THE UNIVERSITY WIDE WORKSHOP: “INTERPROFESSIONAL EDUCATION & COLLABORATIVE PRACTICE

The Center of Interprofessional Education, Research, and Practice (IPERP) at Gulf Medical University (GMU) organized a two-day faculty development workshop on “Interprofessional Education & Collaborative Practice. The workshop aimed to equip GMU faculty and IPE facilitators with the necessary tools and resources to properly implement IPE and interprofessional collaboration in their teaching, research and practice. Participant from 13 countries participated in the workshop online and onsite.



A WORKSHOP ON ART AND SCIENCE OF CERAMIC VENEER CONDUCTED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF PROSTHODONTICS OF COLLEGE OF DENTISTRY

A hands-on workshop exploring the art and science of ceramic veneers was organized and conducted by the Prosthodontics team of College of Dentistry, Gulf Medical University on the 17th& 18th of January 2023 for dental interns, undergraduate dental students, and general dentists. The workshop which was conducted over a period of two days, provided attendees with a unique opportunity to learn about the theoretical concepts of ceramic veneers as an aesthetic restoration to improve patients smile. On the second day participants were able to work with experienced instructors to learn how to prepare and place ceramic veneers, as well as how to design and create custom veneers that are tailored to the individual needs and preferences of patients.



THE QA&IE UNIT WORKSHOP: INSTITUTIONAL SELF-ASSESSMENT SOCIAL ACCOUNTABILITY TOOL (ISAT)

Dr. Sara Osman, Program evaluation and accreditation manager at the QAIE unit led a workshop on GMU self-assessment of social accountability using The Network, Towards Unity for Health (TUFH) tool. TUFH developed a tool named Institutional Self-Assessment Social Accountability Tool (ISAT) for assessing social accountability in different institutions. The workshop aimed to evaluate GMU using the TUFH assessment tool (ISAT) and provide evidence that would aid in the completion and submission of GMU’s application.

GULF MEDICAL UNIVERSITY ACCELERATES STUDENTS’ INNOVATION AT 16TH ANNUAL MEDICAL, ART AND SCIENCE EXHIBITION BY AWARDING DH30,000 CASH PRIZES

Gulf Medical University (GMU) concluded its 16th edition of Annual Medical, Art and Science Exhibition (MASE) competition for high school students, which saw the participation of more than 55 schools in 6 different categories including project, poster, painting, music, poetry, and business idea.



ANAESTHESIA TECHNOLOGY STUDENTS OF COHS GMU CONDUCT MOTHERHOOD AWARENESS – COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT ACTIVITY AT THUMBAY UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL

Students and faculty of Anaesthesia Technology Department of College of Health Sciences, Gulf Medical University, successfully conducted a Motherhood awareness program, at Thumbay University Hospital on the occasion of World Mother’s Day

The students and faculty had one to one interaction with brochures and survey questionnaires to mothers who visited the OPD. Main intention of the awareness program is to improve maternal health through education.



WORLD DIGESTIVE HEALTH DAY IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME

Understanding the importance of Digestive health in general well-being, the students of the BSN 2021 cohort adopted this health day to create awareness regarding ‘Irritable Bowel Syndrome’ (IBS). The students visited ‘Acero Building Systems’ in Dubai, in order to educate the employees of the organization. The students had planned various activities to educate the staff of the organization in a fun &  interactive way, which included a station where participants shared what they had for breakfast, posters on facts and figures including latest statistics of IBS in UAE, Role play regarding the signs and symptoms, pin the organ game, Tic-tac-toe to identify gut positive food and gut negative food, live food display both good and not-so-healthy.

 


GMU-IVPN STUDENTS CLUB ORGANIZES A COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT ACTIVITY ON MEDICATIONS USE DURING FASTING IN RAMADAN

In a recent community engagement activity held on April 10, GMU-IVPN Club pharmacy students took the lead in counseling patients on the proper use of medications during the month of Ramadan. During the holy month of Ramadan, the students recognized the importance of educating patients on how to manage their medications while fasting.



ORAL HYGIENE PRACTICES AMONG STUDENTS AND CARETAKERS AT DUBAI CENTER FOR SPECIAL NEEDS A COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT INITIATIVE.

The College of Dentistry, Gulf Medical University in collaboration with Curaden Academy visited the Dubai Center for Special Needs to educate students and caretakers of oral hygiene practices on the 23rd of February 2023. Dental students from different academic years delivered a short video presentation and demonstrated the technique of tooth brushing on dental models to empower the practice of good oral hygiene
