SDG 06: Clean Water and Sanitation

2024/2025
Gulf Medical University (GMU) advances Sustainable Development Goal 6 – Clean Water and Sanitation by implementing responsible water-management systems, promoting water conservation, and integrating sustainability into academic and operational practices. Guided by GMU-POL-S07-017 – Sustainable Resource Management Policy, the University ensures efficient water use, pollution prevention, and environmental awareness across its academic community.
1. Water Governance and Policy Framework
Under the Sustainable Resource Management Policy, GMU is committed to:
Reducing water consumption by 10% within five years.
Adopting water-efficient technologies and fixtures across all facilities.
Implementing grey-water recycling systems for irrigation and flushing.
Engaging the community in awareness and education programs promoting sustainable water use.
2. Water-Efficiency Infrastructure and Conservation Proposed Measures
Water-Saving Fixtures:Â All campus buildings are equipped with low-flow faucets, aerators, and dual-flush toilets, reducing water use by up to 50%.
Waterless Urinals:Â Installed in high-traffic areas to further minimize water consumption.
Grey-Water Recycling System:Â Captures gently used water for reuse in irrigation and toilet flushing.
Landscape Optimization:Â Utilizes drought-resistant plants and timed drip irrigation systems to prevent waste.
Leak Detection and Monitoring:Â Routine inspections ensure prompt repair of leaks and optimize consumption.

3. Awareness and Capacity Building
GMU fosters a culture of water stewardship through educational and outreach initiatives:
World Water Day 2025 – “Glacier Preservation: A university-wide event highlighting the global importance of freshwater conservation, featuring exhibitions, debates, and student-led awareness projects.
Curricular Integration:Â Water sustainability and public health modules are embedded in environmental and health sciences courses.

4. Water Quality and Health Standards
GMU ensures full compliance with Ajman and UAE municipal water quality regulations.
Drinking and cooling water systems undergo regular testing by certified laboratories under the supervision of the Health & Safety Office.
Wastewater management follows approved treatment protocols, meeting all environmental and health standards.
Conclusion
Through proactive governance, infrastructure improvements, and education-driven awareness, Gulf Medical University demonstrates a strong institutional commitment to SDG 6 – Clean Water and Sanitation. These collective efforts reduce environmental impact, enhance operational sustainability, and empower future healthcare professionals to advocate for global water equity and public health protection.
