Gulf Medical University (GMU) actively Sustainable Development Goal 11 — Sustainable Cities and Communities, through initiatives that promote inclusivity, safety, resilience, and sustainability across its campus and community operations.GMU’s approach integrates urban health promotion, sustainable infrastructure, accessible student services, and local partnerships that strengthen the social and environmental fabric of Ajman and the UAE.The University’s mission aligns with national priorities for sustainable urban growth, positioning GMU as a model of a “living lab” where education, innovation, and social responsibility meet to support healthier, more sustainable communities.
1. Sustainable and Inclusive Campus Infrastructure
GMU continuously enhances its physical and social environment to ensure accessibility, safety, and inclusivity for all members of its academic community.
Student Housing and Transport:
GMU provides safe, affordable, and well-maintained hostels for students, equipped with supervised housing facilities, transportation to and from campus, and health and safety protocols that ensure a secure living and learning experience.
Accessible Food Services:
The University’s modern food court at Thumbay Medicity offers nutritious and affordable dining options with extended operating hours, supporting students and staff of diverse nationalities and dietary needs. This initiative reflects GMU’s commitment to equitable access to healthy food and social engagement spaces.
Recreational and Wellness Facilities:
GMU ensures the well-being of students and staff through access to the Body & Soul Health Club and Spa located within Thumbay Medicity.
The club offers extensive fitness and recreation facilities, including a ladies-only section, promoting gender-inclusive wellness and community life.

GMU students and faculty regularly organize free medical screening events and health awareness drives in collaboration with Ajman Municipality and community organizations.
Activities include monitoring vital signs, offering consultations, and distributing educational materials focused on hygiene, nutrition, and chronic disease prevention.
Public Awareness Initiatives:
GMU’s colleges actively participate in national and global health observances such as World Health Day, Autism Awareness Month, and World Mental Health Day.
Through these campaigns, students apply classroom learning to real-world contexts, promoting preventive healthcare and civic responsibility.
First Aid and CPR Training:
In collaboration with local schools, GMU organizes hands-on first-aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) workshops, empowering teachers and students to respond to emergencies effectively.

GMU promotes digital transformation to reduce paper usage and has adopted Zero Single-Use Plastic campaigns across its cafeterias and offices.

Drought-resistant landscaping and native plant cultivation support urban biodiversity while reducing irrigation needs.

MASE 2024 hosted over 3,000 high school participants from 96 UAE schools, fostering creativity, interdisciplinary learning, and environmental awareness.
Research and Conferences:
GMU’s Thumbay Institute for AI in Healthcare and Thumbay Institute for Precision Medicine spearhead research addressing sustainability, health technology, and social impact.
The 2025 International Conference on AI for Social Impact demonstrated how AI can drive smart, sustainable solutions in healthcare and community development.
These educational and research-driven activities strengthen GMU’s role as a regional hub for innovation and sustainable community advancement.
5. Urban Partnership and Stakeholder Collaboration
