SDG 13: Climate Action

2024/2025

Gulf Medical University (GMU) demonstrates strong institutional commitment to Sustainable Development Goal 13 – Climate Action through policies, operational initiatives, and awareness programs that promote sustainability across all sectors of campus life. Guided by the Sustainable Resource Management Policy (GMU-POL-S07-017), GMU advances climate resilience by integrating energy and water efficiency, waste-reduction strategies, and stakeholder engagement aligned with the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 vision.

1. Policy Framework and Strategic Governance

Approved in August 2024 and reviewed in November 2024, the Sustainable Resource Management Policy defines GMU’s roadmap for reducing its environmental footprint and embedding sustainability into institutional operations.

Key objectives:

  • Reduce water consumption by 10% within five years.

  • Reduce energy use by 10% through smart systems and efficiency projects.

  • Minimize waste generation by 10% via recycling and reuse.

  • Achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 through renewable energy adoption and carbon auditing.

  • Promote awareness and education on sustainability and climate action across all colleges.

Implementation and annual performance reviews are coordinated by the Vice Chancellor (Academics) and the Health & Safety Officer, under the oversight of the Deanship of Quality Assurance and Institutional Effectiveness (QA & IE).

2. Energy and Water Efficiency Actions

GMU has initiated systematic infrastructure upgrades to meet its energy and water conservation goals:

  • Lighting & Controls: Campus-wide replacement of lighting with LED fixtures equipped with smart occupancy and daylight sensors.

  • HVAC Optimization: Installation of Energy Recovery Ventilation (ERV) systems and smart thermostats to enhance cooling efficiency and reduce energy loads.

  • Renewable Energy Transition: Feasibility studies approved for rooftop solar panels and solar carports to achieve 100% renewable energy by 2040.

  • Water Conservation: Deployment of low-flow faucets, dual-flush toilets, and waterless urinals across facilities.

  • Grey-Water Recycling: Development of a campus-wide grey-water system for irrigation and flushing, expected to reduce water use by up to 50%.

3. Waste Reduction and Circular Practices

GMU has adopted sustainable waste-management and circular economy principles:

  • Digital Transformation: Administrative and academic digitalization has reduced paper use by approximately 30%.

  • Centralized Printing: Double-sided default printing and centralized stations promote responsible use.

  • Green Laboratories: Micro-scale chemistry and a centralized hazardous inventory system reduce chemical waste and ensure safe disposal.

4. Community Engagement and Awareness

Key highlights for 2024–2025 included:

  • World Water Day 2025 – “Glacier Preservation”: A multi-college event raising awareness about glacial melt and water security through exhibitions and discussions.

  • Earth Day 2025 – Eco-Friendly Dentistry: The College of Dentistry’s green dentistry campaign showcased eco-conscious clinical materials and practices.

  • Green Entrepreneurship 2025: BSN student Mhikevin Jade Jimenez earned third place nationally for an innovative sustainability-focused business proposal.

5. Climate Action Plan and Academic Integration

GMU’s Climate Action Plan outlines its long-term sustainability roadmap, including:

  • Conducting annual carbon audits and publishing sustainability reports.

  • Retrofitting existing facilities and applying green building standards to all new projects.

  • Encouraging sustainable commuting—carpooling, cycling, and electric vehicle infrastructure.

  • Integrating climate science and sustainability topics within academic curricula and student research projects.

Conclusion

Through its structured policy framework, resource efficiency programs, waste reduction initiatives, and community-driven climate advocacy, Gulf Medical University demonstrates strong alignment with SDG 13: Climate Action. The university’s operational and educational practices actively support national and global sustainability goals, reinforcing GMU’s role as a leading environmentally responsible institution in the UAE higher education sector.
